In 2006, Mercedes-Benz’s compact C-Class was reduced to an all-sedan line; the station wagon was dropped. For 2007, the high-performance C55 AMG has also been deleted, but some formerly AMG-specific parts — including a rear spoiler, dual exhaust tips and Birdseye maple interior trim — are now included on regular sedans with the optional Sport package. Three versions of the rear-drive C-Class are available — C230, C280, and C350. The C280 comes powered by a 2.5-liter V-6 that generates 201 horsepower, while the C280 gets a 3.0-liter V-6 that nets 228-horsepower; the top C350 is fitted with a 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 268 horsepower. For 2007, the C230’s V-6 is offered with E85/flex-fuel capability and the C280 comes standard with dual power front seats and steering column with memory. Active front head restraints designed to help reduce whiplash injuries are also standard — as are four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS and Brake Assist, Automatic Slip Control, Electronic Stability Program, and front-seat side-impact and side-curtain airbags. Options include a navigation system, premium Harmon Kardon audio system, xenon high-intensity headlamps, and an interface that allows an Apple iPod MP3 player to integrate with the car’s audio system. The player is operated via steering-wheel controls and the multifunction display in the car’s instrument cluster.
