RX-8

The sporty RX-8 debuted for 2004 and is the first Mazda in years to be sold in the U.S. with a rotary engine. The four-passenger RX-8 is designed with dual rear-hinged half doors that permit easy entry into and egress from the backseat, but with the overall look of a coupe. Mazda's Renesis rotary engine generates 238 horsepower when fitted to the standard six-speed-manual gearbox, and 197 horsepower when the available four-speed-automatic transmission is specified. The RX-8 includes four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes and a limited-slip rear axle, while an optional Dynamic Stability Control senses skidding and applies the brakes and controls engine torque as needed to help prevent a loss of control. Only few updates are on tap for 2005.

Rotary fans can rejoice: the Wankel's back.
