Mazda3

The Mazda3 replaced the former Protégé in Mazda's lineup last year and continues for 2005 as an attractive and somewhat sporty compact-car alternative. Available in sedan and hatchback versions, the Mazda3 shares platforms with the Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon, and its relatively long wheelbase affords a roomy interior. A 150-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers the base model, while the "s" versions offer a 2.3-liter four-cylinder that generates a healthier 160 horses. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. Available features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, front-side and side-curtain airbags, a navigation system, and high-intensity xenon headlamps.
