Somewhere out of my immediate reach, Diana Krall (Mrs. Elvis Costello to you) is using her trademark perfect phrasing to ask me if I’d like pepperoni on my pizza. My parents have come along for the ride, Dad marveling at the Shoji-like screen that covers the sunroof while Mom natters that he’s getting dirt on the exquisite carpet. And while I can’t pick him out by face, I could swear that George Bush Sr. is in front, talking with Publisher Paul Eisenstein about his next round of skydiving. Even more shocking, Paul’s not hammering him about his son’s policies.

Clearly I must be hallucinating. Or dreaming. It’s probably both; since we left Geneva at the wheel of the enormous, exquisitely made Maybach 62 limousine, I’ve been riding wave after wave of jetlag-induced sleep, fully reclined in a first-class chaise, a cold flute of Champagne clipped into the console next to me, Paul at the wheel, and another journalist tapping his keys to an overdue story and his toes to Diana, who’s actually playing on both of the monitors faired into the back of the Maybach’s front seats.

For the next two days I won’t even get behind the wheel of the leviathan, unexpectedly fleet-footed 62 — so if you’re wondering how it drives, you’ll have to pony up the $359,500 for your own copy (or a measly $308,000 for the shorter-wheelbase Maybach 57). I will be chauffeured from meal to meal, the flute never spilling and never empty, and actually, the DVD never veering from Diana’s perfect-pitched Paris performance.
