RX400h

Originally scheduled to debut in the fall of 2004, Lexus' first hybrid-powered vehicle is now penciled in for a February 2005 introduction. The automaker decided to delay the new RX400h's release for added quality control in the wake of a report that owners of hybrid-powered vehicles had been reporting higher-then-expected defects.  Based on the RX330 sport-utility vehicle, the RX 400h will be powered by a new V-6 version of the gas-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain that's otherwise found in the Toyota Prius. The 3.3-liter gasoline engine, with augmentation from an electric motor, is said to produce around 270 horsepower. Not only does the hybrid powertrain generate 40 more horses than its gas-only equivalent in the RX330, it gets a claimed 36 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, and it meets California 's strict requirements as a Super-Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). Expect a smooth ride and supple handling, with an advanced form of stability control called Vehicle Dynamic Management on hand for added surefootedness over a wide variety of conditions.
