Redesigned last year, among the many improvements to Lexus' midsize "crossover" sport-utility vehicle was a larger 3.3-liter V-6 engine, which prompted an update to the RX330 designation. This powerplant delivers a smooth 230 horsepower and drives either the front or all four wheels via a five-speed-automatic transmission. Larger than the version it replaced, with a more-aerodynamic exterior that's free of body cladding, the RX330 is both handsome and capable over a wide range of conditions (though its car-based underpinnings limit the vehicle's off-road abilities). Four-wheel-disc anti-lock power brakes with brake assist, and both stability and traction control are standard, along with front side, side curtain, and driver's-side knee airbags. An available adaptive lighting system aims the headlights in the direction of a curve for better visibility at night. A navigation system, laser-guided cruise control, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and a Mark Levinson premium audio system are optional. Minor changes only are in the works for 2005.
