Land Rover's latest mid-size luxury sport-utility vehicle borrows key styling cues from its larger showroom companion, the Range Rover. For 2006, a new base engine is added to the line, a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that generates 216 horsepower and a strong 269 lb-ft of torque. A 300-hp 4.4-liter V-8 engine remains available, and both powerplants come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive with a central-locking differential that engages when conditions warrant maximum grip comes standard, as does Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control. The LR3 rides on a fully independent double-wishbone suspension, with height-adjustable rear air springs. A unique Terrain Response feature allows the driver to tailor the vehicle's electronic controls and traction aids according to five sets of road conditions. Both rows of rear seats can fold into the floor to maximize the LR3's cargo-carrying abilities. Front side and side curtain airbags, along with many amenities are standard. A newly added Premium Package includes leather upholstery and trim, Harmon Kardon audio, power sunroof for the front seat and a fixed glass roof panel over the second and third rows, and a second-row audio port.
