Sportage

A brand-new version of the compact Sportage sport-utility vehicle bows for 2005 that promises vast improvements over the previous generation that was last sold in the U.S. as a 2003 model. While the former model had contentious truck-like underpinnings, the new Sportage is based on Hyundai's equally new Tucson "crossover" SUV, though it carries its own distinctive and newly contemporary styling. Front- and all-wheel-drive models are offered, and the revised model's ride and handling qualities should benefit noticeably from the Tucson 's carlike architecture, with added interior comfort. Power is said to come from either a standard 140-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or an available 2.7-liter V-6 that produces 173 horses, mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.
