The more
traditionally styled Patriot model shares its platform with the Compass but
offers a different, full-time Freedom Drive II four-wheel-drive system with low
range gearing that earns it the much-desired "Trail-Rated" capability the
street-oriented Compass doesn't offer. Though not as tough as the
Liberty
or the Wrangler, the Patriot offers a
significant step up in rough-terrain capability relative to the Compass, as well
as exterior styling that's more "trucky." Standard safety features on the base
Patriot include side curtain airbags, stability and traction control, Electronic
Roll Mitigation and anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist and rough-road detection
technology. All models (base and Limited) come with and AM/FM radio with CD
player and auxiliary audio input jack, tilt steering wheel, rear window
defroster and a center console sliding armrest that can be moved forward to
accommodate shorter drivers. The standard drivetrain is the same as the one used
in the Compass -- a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine good for 172 horsepower with
the buyer's choice of five-speed manual or CVT. Though not confirmed at the time
of this writing, a high-efficiency diesel engine may become available later in
2007 or 2008.
