A brand new generation of the Grand Cherokee debuts for 2005 with added power and sophistication and updated styling. A 210-horsepower 3.7-liter V-6 engine is newly standard. While the former-generation's 230-horsepower 4.7-liter V-8 remains available, a new top 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine generates 325 horsepower and 370 lb-ft of torque. As is the case in the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum, the 5.7-liter engine is able to deactivate half its cylinders during cruising and light acceleration to increase fuel economy by a claimed 20 percent. All three engines come with five-speed automatic transmissions that now include manual-shift capability. Stability control is newly offered for steadier on-road abilities, and a new Dynamic Handling System comes standard with the HEMI powerplant. No less than three new full-time four-wheel-drive systems are offered, including the Quadra-Drive II system that employs electronic limited-slip differentials for added off-road capability. The vehicle's ride and handling qualities benefit from a new independent suspension in the front and a five-link array in the rear, with more precise steering characteristics. A navigation system, DVD video package, audiophile Boston Acoustics stereo, a hands-free "Bluetooth" communication system and rear Park Assist warnings are all available on the new model. A stretched "Commander" version that includes a third-row seat will reportedly debut for 2006.
