Jaguar's S-Type luxury sport sedan will go on sale here in the spring, adding a third line to the product range.

The new model is built on a completely new platform that it will share with the new Lincoln LS. The rear-wheel-drive S-Type has a double-wishbone suspension and a choice of two engines: the new Jaguar-engineered 3.0-liter V-6 or the 4.0-liter V-8. The V-8 is rated at 281 horsepower (hp) and 287 pound-feet (lb-ft) of torque. The V-6 is rated at 240 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired with a new five-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 will sell for $42,500 and the V-8 model for $48,000.

Among the standard features are a system of voice-activated controls to operate the climate control, audio system and telephone; dynamic stability control to prevent skids; and reverse park control, which beeps to warn drivers of an obstacle behind the vehicle. Also available as an option will be an in-dash Global Positioning Satellite navigation system with Jaguar Assist, an emergency messaging system that provides automated response if an airbag deploys.

Here's what's on tap for the rest of the lineup, which has undergone extensive revision over the last four model-years.

Changes have been made to upgrade the V-8 4.0-liter engine, which is now equipped with continuously variable cam phasing on naturally aspirated engines, resulting in a stepless adjustment range instead of the two-step system. This results in a significant boost in torque at lower revs. This engine also gets a revised engine management system.

XK8 coupe and convertible get new exterior colors; the convertible top comes in a new color — beige. The XJ Series sedans have modest changes in 1999. The XJR supercharged model gets larger front disc brakes that go from 12.0 to 12.8 inches. Burled walnut replaces stained bird's-eye maple. The XJ8 (standard wheelbase) and the XJ8 L (long wheelbase) and Vanden Plas all get new exterior colors.
