This is the year of the VehiCROSS. Isuzu is finally going to bring the futuristic VehiCROSS sport-utility vehicle to America. But only 200 units per month of this techno-design sport-ute will be produced. It will be powered by a 3.5-liter dual-overhead-cam 24-valve V-6 engine, rated at 215 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque. The front suspension is a double-wishbone design with torsion bar springs. The rear suspension has a center four-link coil design. It gets Isuzu's Torque on Demand automatic four-wheel-drive system, which Isuzu says can anticipate wheel slippage and attempt to prevent it before it occurs by automatically redistributing torque.

For 1999, Trooper models equipped with automatic transmissions add the Torque-on-Demand traction control system as standard equipment. Certain models get an optional new "gold package," which features gold badging and gold-trimmed mesh wheels.

The Amigo was re-introduced in 1998. This year, it will be available in hardtop and soft-top versions. The soft top has been re-engineered for better use and permits the tailgate to open without removing the rear window curtain. The polypropylene hardtop allows for glass side and rear windows, along with a removable rear moonroof. An automatic transmission is now available for the V-6 engine.

Rodeo, completely re-engineered in 1998, gets an expanded list of options, new colors, and an all-new trim level. The LSE gets a gold trim package and a new color. The Hombre has a three-door spacecab model, additional exterior colors, interior upgrades and other mechanical and cosmetic improvements.

The Oasis minivan continues, with interior and exterior refinements, new seating and new colors.
