The 1999 Infiniti G20 is longer, higher, sportier, more luxurious and has a more rigid in structure than its predecessor. The new G20, as well as the old, is based on the platform of the Primera, which is sold in Japan and Europe. The U.S. market, however, gets a softer suspension. The old rear suspension has been replaced with the I30's rear multi-link beam design, making the rear end more stable and user-friendly.

The new G20 gets the same engine that powered the previous G20. It is a 2.0-liter dual-overhead-cam 16-valve four-cylinder engine. The horsepower (140 hp) and the torque (132 lb-ft) ratings remain the same, but noise, vibration and harshness are reduced. A five-speed manual is standard. The four-speed automatic transmission has been refined to reduce shift shock and hunting between third and fourth gears.

In addition to dual front airbags, front passengers get side-impact airbags housed on the seats. All five seats have three-point (lap/shoulder) seat belts. Standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, power windows and door locks, and a tilt steering column.

The G20 comes fully equipped in a choice of Standard or Touring (G20t) models. The only major options are the automatic transmission and a Leather and Convenience package. The Touring model includes viscous limited-slip differential, lower-profile performance tires, and rear decklid spoiler.

The I30 received some refinements last year. This year the Infiniti traction control system is available as an option.

This year the Q45 arrives with a number of mechanical and cosmetic enhancements. The front grille has been changed and there is less chrome. There are new headlight and taillight designs, and a new suspension for the touring model (Q45t). It features an electronically modulated suspension that allows the driver to select the desired suspension feel.

The QX4 luxury sport-utility vehicle was introduced as an all-new addition to the lineup as a 1997. No major changes have been made for the new model-year.
