While the ultra-aerodynamic two-seat Insight looks like it rolled out of a science-fiction movie, it's been around for several years now and reigns as the most fuel-efficient auto sold in the U.S. by virtue of its hybrid gas/electric powertrain. A 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine is the primary source of thrust, and it uses an onboard electric motor to provide added power when needed. Acceleration is fairly good for that small a motor, though it's far from as quick a car as its sporty exterior might otherwise indicate. You'll find yourself spending way too much time checking the LCD dashboard gauges that indicates when the gasoline engine is acting alone or in tandem with the DC motor, as well as your current and average fuel economy, but that's all part of the experience. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard and a gearless continuously variable automatic transmission is also offered. Standard features range from anti-lock brakes to keyless entry and a CD stereo. Air conditioning is the car's only option. No changes are evident with the 2005 model.

This sporty waif makes a strong statement for the future.
