GMC's mid-size sport-utility vehicle shares components and platforms with the Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Isuzu Ascender. The stretched version is the XL and includes a third row of seats. Meanwhile, the Envoy XUV includes a unique sliding rear roof that can expand the vehicle's cargo-carrying abilities, provided you frequently carry tall and relatively narrow objects. Two new versions are new for 2005: the luxuriously equipped Envoy Denali and XL Denali. Available in both rear- and four-wheel drive versions, the Denalis come powered by Envoy's otherwise-available 290-horsepower 5.3-liter V-8 engine; a 275-horsepower 4.2-liter in-line six remains the standard powerplant. This year the V-8 engine in the Envoy XL and XUV and XL Denali comes with a fuel-saving Displacement on Demand system in which half of the engine's cylinders are disabled under certain conditions to increase fuel economy by up to eight percent. The vehicle is available with a choice of rear-wheel drive or Autotrac four-wheel drive. Adjustable brake/accelerator pedals, XM satellite radio, and a DVD entertainment system head up the options list.
