The mid-size Fusion was just introduced last year as a new model, but the big news for 2007 is the availability of all-wheel drive. Other updates include newly standard front seat side-impact airbags and curtain airbags on all trim levels, standard auxiliary audio input jack, available Sirius satellite radio and a DVD-based navigation system. Also, fold-down passenger seats are now standard on SE and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, an electrochromic rearview mirror, compass and automatic headlamps are now standard on the SEL. The Fusion is based on the same platform that provides the underpinnings for the Mazda6 and the Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr, which is now the MKZ. There’s choice of either a 160-horsepower, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine or a 221-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 engine. The four-cylinder engine can be mated to either a standard five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, while the V-6 comes with a standard six-speed automatic. Riding on a four-wheel independent suspension with four-wheel-disc brakes, the front-drive Fusion delivers crisp cornering abilities without sacrificing ride quality. Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution are optional. A hybrid version of the Fusion is slated for later in the model year.
