Five Hundred

This contemporary large sedan debuted last year and continues for 2006 with only minor alterations, including a new exterior color, Silver Birch. It shares platforms with both the Ford Freestyle and Volvo XC90 crossover sport-utility vehicles, and the Mercury Montego sedan. It comes with a well-designed interior that offers generous passenger room in both the front and rear, with upright seating and truly large trunk. Coming in either front- or all-wheel-drive, the Five Hundred is powered by a just-sufficient 200-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6 engine that can be fitted to either a continuously variable transmission or an available six-speed automatic. A fully independent suspension offers surprisingly capable handling; traction control and self-leveling rear shock absorbers are optional on front-drive versions and are standard on all-wheel-drive models. Side-impact airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy rollover protection system are optional, as are a fold-flat front passenger seat and reverse parking assist. For 2006, a rear DVD entertainment system is newly offered on SEL and Limited models, a navigation system is offered on the Limited, and the availability of leather seating is extended to the SE trim level.

Maybe they should have called it the Floridian.
