Debuting for 2005 and sharing platforms with both the also-new Ford Freestyle and Volvo XC90 crossover sport-utility vehicles is the all-new mid-size Five Hundred sedan. The same basic vehicle with minor styling modifications is sold as the Mercury Montego. While it's a foot shorter, overall, than the full-size CrownVictoria , it provides greater interior room, particularly in the rear, with upright, SUV-like theater seating, and a cavernous trunk. Coming in either front- or all-wheel-drive, the Five Hundred is powered by the latest version of Ford's Duratec 3.0-liter V-6 engine. It can be fitted to either a continuously variable transmission that is said to deliver manual gearbox performance with shift-free convenience or an available six-speed automatic. A fully independent suspension, stiff body structure, and 17-inch wheels and tires (18-inch on SEL and Limited models) afford solid handling around even the sharpest curves. Traction control is optional on front-drive versions and is standard on all-wheel-drive models. The latter also comes with self-leveling rear shock absorbers. Side-impact airbags and Ford's Safety Canopy rollover protection system are optional as are a fold-flat front passenger seat and reverse parking assist.
