The Dodge Dakota may no longer be the only mid-size pickup on the market, with last year's introductions of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon , but it remains the only one to offer a V-8 engine. A complete makeover for 2005 gives it bolder styling, particularly its mammoth front grille and headlamp treatments, adapted from the current version of the full-size Ram Pickup. The truck is 3.7 inches longer than before, with most of the added length ahead of the front axle for safety purposes. While the base engine remains a V-6, the newly added 3.7-liter Power Tech is more powerful than last year's standard motor, producing 210 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. The aforementioned available 4.7-liter Magnum V-8 generates 230 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard across the line, while a choice of four- and five-speed automatic transmissions are also available. The five-speed automatic includes a unique dual-ratio second gear for better power management in towing, passing, and grade-change situations. Rear- and four-wheel-drive models remain available. The two-door, five-passenger Club Cab configuration is now standard, while Quad Cab models include four doors and six-passenger seating. A new "Stampede" package includes specific monochromatic moldings, 16-inch aluminum wheels, wheel flares and a rear stabilizer bar.
