ECHO BAY, Nevada — As our lives get more complex, the demand on our vehicles gets more diverse, and we prize those with features that do double or triple duty. While sport-utes have become popular, a lot of folks have found them lacking for the dirtier tasks but useful when the need arises to haul more than three folks.

In other parts of the world, pickups have had four doors for years and serve as family and work people-haulers as well as doing the dirty work. Nissan introduced its Frontier last year with extra doors, and the truck has been contributing to the automaker's revival. Ford has announced its full-size F-150 with a SuperCrew cab, and now Dodge is standing in the middle ground with its Quad Cab Dakota.

Today, the majority of trucks are used less for working than for hauling people, and styling rivals function in the purchase decision. The Dakota R/T combines Dodge's largest V-8, a lowered suspension, and low profile tires to enable it to handle as well as it looks. And with a throaty, free-flow exhaust, it sounds as mean as it looks.

Lots of people buy trucks since they are some of the cheapest vehicles on the market. Most are second vehicles for a family, but many young singles, rather than limiting themselves to dull compact sedans, like the image of a truck. By design, the Dodge starts out within $2,000 of the bottom of the market.

The couple grand extra buys a substantially larger truck, both inside and in the cargo area. With the 6-foot bench seat, there is no problem seating three in reasonable comfort. The Quad Cab is large enough for six and is comfortable in that configuration even for adults on all but the longest trips.

Usually in small trucks, I push the seat all the way to the rear, tilt the back, and still feel cramped. In Dakota's short cab, even I am comfortable. In the extended cab, there is ample room for lots of gear in back, and even occasional short-trip passengers. In the Quad, you can plan on bringing along the whole family. As a welcome feature, the Quad's rear windows not only roll down but also go down all the way.
