Chrysler's first rear-drive sedan in decades - one that offers an available V-8 engine - is the elegantly styled 300 that was introduced at mid-year 2004 as an '05 model. Its counterpart at Dodge is the racier-looking Magnum station wagon. The base model starts out with a 190-horsepower 2.7-liter V-6, four-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels and tires, a power driver's seat, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel among its standard features. The next step up is the Touring model, which comes with a 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6, and adds traction- and stability control systems, brake assist, aluminum wheels, and leather seating, while a Limited level offers a few additional features. The 300C version ups the power ante with its 340-horsepower "HEMI" V-8, which is mated to a five-speed automatic gearbox with manual-shift capability. Also included here are 18-inch wheels, a 288-watt Boston Acoustics audio system and a richer-looking interior that's trimmed with tortoise-shell accents. All-wheel-drive versions become newly available by the end of the 2004 calendar year, and a new top model joins the line. The performance-minded 300C SRT-8 leads the pack with a high-output 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 that's rated at a whopping 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph times are said to clock in at the low five-second range. Suspension upgrades contribute to a sportier feel, and the SRT-8 rides on massive 20-inch wheels and tires. Options across the line include a navigation system, rear-parking sensors, and genuine walnut trim.

2005 Chrysler 300/Dodge Magnum by TCC Team (3/15/2004)
A triumphant return for rear-wheel drive.
