This retro-styled convertible pickup was launched last year and is reminiscent in its appearance of classic Chevy trucks from the 1940s. The truck's rounded hardtop retracts to an area just behind the two-seat cabin for enjoying a sunny afternoon, and a remote-opening hardtop encloses its short pickup bed. A new 6.0-liter V-8 engine is borrowed from the Corvette and delivers a potent 390 horses. While a four-speed automatic gearbox remains standard, a six-speed manual gearbox is now optional. In addition, the steering has been retuned, the exhaust system revised, and a MP3-capable audio system has been added for 2005. The SSR remains more of a show truck than a work vehicle, however, so don't expect much in the way of hauling, towing, or cargo-carrying abilities. Items like side-impact airbags, traction control, a limited-slip rear axle, CD stereo, leather upholstery, and a trip computer all come standard. Chevy is hinting that an SUV variant may be in the works for the not-too-distant future.
