New for 2005, the compact Equinox is Chevrolet's first "crossover" sport utility vehicle and shares platforms with the Saturn Vue, though it's a bit larger, overall, and comes with exclusive powertrains, equipment, and styling. The Equinox comes powered by a 185-horsepower V-6 engine that's drives either the front or all four wheels via a five-speed-automatic transmission. McPherson struts are installed at the front wheels for enhanced ride and handling characteristics, with an independent four-link rear suspension with coil springs in the rear. Anti-lock brakes and traction control are packaged together as a single option for front-wheel-drive models (ABS comes standard with AWD), and side-impact airbags are also available. To maximize either rear-passenger room or cargo space, the back seat can adjust as much as eight inches fore and aft. Both the rear seat and front passenger's seat can be folded flat to further expand its carrying abilities. A versatile height-adjustable cargo panel can function as either a shelf, security cover, or a picnic table. Chevy claims an optional towing package allows the Equinox to haul 3500 pounds, which enables it to pull a small fishing boat or pop-up camper.
