Corvette

Looking and acting nothing like its 50-plus years might otherwise attest, America 's longest-running sports coupe is refreshed for 2005 in an all-new sixth generation that comes with more-refined styling and added muscle. Styling is clean front to back, but it's more evolutionary than revolutionary, though exposed headlamps return to the Corvette for the first time since 1962. The car is five inches shorter, overall, and is an inch narrower than the C5 it replaces, which affords a more athletic appearance, but with equivalent interior room. At a .28 coefficient of drag, this is the most aerodynamic Corvette ever, with improved anti-lift characteristics that enhance its high-speed stability. The latest version of Chevy's small-block V-8 is a 6.0-liter version that delivers an impressive 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, yet is able to offer an estimated 22.6 mpg in city/highway driving that saves it from being assessed a gas-guzzler tax (something its corporate cousin at Cadillac, the XLR, has not managed to avoid). Updated transmissions include a Tremec six-speed manual that's offered with a choice of two gear ratios, as well as a four-speed automatic gearbox. As is the custom, the new Corvette offers a long list of high-tech items as either standard or optional equipment, including keyless access with push-button start, a reconfigurable head-up display, voice-operated DVD-navigation system, and XM satellite radio. A convertible model will follow the removable-roof coupe in the spring of 2005.
