Coming wrapped in its own sharp-edged styling and exclusive powertrain, the Chevrolet Corvette-based XLR roadster debuted for 2004 to become the new standard-bearer at Cadillac. While the company largely failed at its last attempt to create and market a flagship two-seater, the ill-fated Allante in the late 1980s, the XLR seems to be a hit. The vehicle is built with extensive use of aluminum to help make it light and nimble, and a power retractable hardtop enables it to go from closed coupe to open roadster in less than 30 seconds. Ample power comes from a 320-horsepower version of Cadillac's 4.6-liter "Northstar" V-8 engine, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. 0-60 times are said to register at around six seconds. Inside, the XLR is elegantly styled, highlighted by wood trim, aluminum accents and gauges created by Italy 's Bulgari. Its power perforated-leather seats are both heated and cooled. Included are such chassis control systems as StabiliTrak stability control, Magnasteer power steering, and Magnetic Ride Control, and the car includes a navigation system, keyless access with push-button start, adaptive cruise control, and a DVD entertainment system. For 2005, XLR buyers can choose between either a dark or light eucalyptus interior, and can specify a Blue Steel exterior.

2004 Cadillac XLR by TCC Team (5/26/2003)
A new lease on sportscar life for GM's rapid social climber.
