Introduced last year, the rear-drive STS sedan is a somewhat larger and sportier version of the CTS with which it shares its "Sigma" platform. The base model comes powered by a 225-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine, while a 320-horsepower Northstar 4.6-liter V-8 is also available. Both are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. A high-performance STS-V version is new for 2006 and comes powered by a supercharged 4.4-liter Northstar V-8 engine that generates a blazing 469 horsepower and can reach 60 mph. from a standing start in less than five seconds. That powerplant drives the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission with a "Driver Shift Control" function for quasi-manual operation. The STS-V also rides on larger wheels and tires, with stiffer stabilizer bars and suspension springs, a quicker steering ratio, and a specifically tuned chassis; Brembo brakes are included with larger rotors, pads, and calipers to help rein in all those added horses. All versions include four-channel StabiliTrak stability control and Magnetic Ride Control, along with a full array of amenities. For 2006, all-wheel drive becomes newly available with the V-6 engine for added traction and stability. A new premium Bose 5.1 Studio Surround Sound audio array is teamed with a navigation system in the V-8's 1SE option package. In addition, the STS comes in three new exterior colors.
