STS

The long-running Seville was Cadillac's flagship car, the vehicle in which new technology, including the original Northstar V-8 engine debuted not only in the division's line, but often among all of General Motors as well. With flagship status having been passed on to the rakish XLR roadster last year, the Seville evolves for 2005 into an entirely new vehicle, renamed the STS after its former top trim level. It now exists as a somewhat larger and sportier big brother to the CTS with which it shares its "Sigma" platform. It's smaller than the Seville it replaces, and now comes standard with a V-6 engine, the 225-horsepower 3.6-liter version it shares with the CTS. While a 320-horsepower Northstar 4.6-liter V-8 is optional, the former Seville no longer leads Cadillac sedans in power - that distinction goes to the CTS-V and its 5.7-liter V-8. A five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift function is the only available gearbox. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the vehicle's more-responsive handling, thanks to its more-rigid structure, upgraded suspension components and a choice of 17- or 18-inch tires. GM's Magnetic Ride Control that offers a selection of performance or touring settings is available, as is four-channel StabiliTrak stability control and high-precision ZF steering gearing. While they may not be "firsts," there's still no shortage of high-tech features offered, including adaptive cruise control, a four-color head-up display, keyless entry/push-button-start system, a remote starter, a heated steering wheel, and a multi-format Bose surround-sound audio system.
