2003 Cadillac CTS (4/14/2002)

Cadillac will roll out a 400-horsepower version of its new CTS sedan early next year,  drawing power from a modified version of the LS6 engine used in the top-of-the-line Corvette Z06.

It will mark the launch of a new generation of high-performance Caddys, a program TheCarConnection first reported on last year. Tentatively named CTSi, “the goal is to beat the (BMW) M5 in every turn,” says a well-placed, senior GM source who declined to be identified.

One source who did discuss the project is Tom Stephens, the automaker’s powertrain chief.  Stephens was vague on a few details, such  as the specifics of the high-performance small-block V-8 the project will utilize.  But he did emphasize that t he CTSi will obey a long-standing rule that no other GM product can outperform the Corvette, or at least the top-line model, the Z06, which can launch from 0-60 in just 3.9 seconds. “The LS6 in the Z06 is king and will stay king.”

Nonetheless, sources who have driven a prototype of the CTSi describe it as “blisteringly fast,” something Stephens said should send a message to one key European competitor. “Tell BMW we’re coming after them and we’re going to beat them.”

That boast is enhanced by the automaker’s confidence in the base CTS platform, which insiders insist is the best sedan the automaker has ever built. During development, the CTS received extensive testing on the grueling German race circuit at Nuerburgring.
