Performing double-duty, the new-for-2005 mid-size LaCrosse sedan replaces both the Century and the Regal in Buick's line, though the existing Century will continue for a foreshortened 2005 run. The LaCrosse rides on the same platform as the Pontiac Grand Prix, and carries a similar profile, though with distinctive - and considerably more conservative-looking - front- and rear-end styling cues. While the car comes powered in its CX and CXL versions by General Motors' familiar 200-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 engine, the top CXS model offers a new 3.6-liter aluminum V-6 that employs variable valve timing to produce an acceleration-enhanced 240 horsepower. The carryover four-speed automatic transmission is the only available gearbox, even as the competition moves toward offering more-sophisticated five-speed versions. Revised suspension and steering systems are said to afford a smoother ride with improved handling and a more-precise on-center feel, and the CXS benefits further in this regard from its lower-profile 17-inch tires and larger stabilizer bars. Buick's "QuietTuning" design is said to reduce noise and vibration levels. The car's interior is accommodating and fairly plush, but is more contemporary looking than in past Buicks. A long list of features come standard, while such amenities as side-curtain airbags, rear parking assist, a remote engine-starting system, and XM satellite radio are available as options.
