Introduced at mid-year 2004, the X3 is a "sports activity vehicle" that's based on the 3-Series sedan, but bears more than a passing resemblance to its larger stablemate, the X5 SUV. A 184-horsepower 2.5-liter in-line six-cylinder engine powers the base 2.5i version, though we think most motorists would prefer the gutsier 225-horsepower, 3.0-liter version comes with the 3.0i. Either engine can be mated to either a six-speed-manual transmission or an optional five-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. A new xDrive "intelligent" all-wheel-drive system permits infinitely adjustable front-to-rear torque distribution for surefootedness on wet or snowy pavement. An optional Sport Package adds a tauter suspension and 18-inch wheels and tires for added handling prowess, and includes power sport seats with driver's side memory functions, and a sport steering wheel. An iPod Adapter is newly available for 2005 that creates a seamless integration between Apple's popular iPod MP3 player and the vehicle's audio system.

Not quite the smaller X5.
