7-Series

The fourth generation of BMW's largest sedan is expected to continue for 2005 with only minor changes, though early reports had the manufacturer "toning down" the car's still-controversial styling cues a bit, particularly at the rear of the vehicle. Coming in regular- and long-wheelbase forms, the 745 drives the rear wheels via a 325-horsepower 4.4-liter V-8 engine and a six-speed-automatic transmission. The top 760i, meanwhile, packs a 6.0-liter V-12 under its hood, which generates a significant boost in power, all the way up to 438 horses. This remains a roomy and accommodating full-size luxury sedan that offers a sporting nature for affluent enthusiasts. Front-side and side curtain airbags come standard, along with Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Brake Control, and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional in the base model and standard in the 760i is an Adaptive Ride Package that includes a self-leveling rear air suspension system with Electronic Damping Control. Already well-equipped in its standard form, the top model adds amenities like a heated steering wheel, park distance control, ventilated and heated seats, power rear and side sunshades, mammoth 19-inch wheels and tires, and a ski bag. The 7-Series includes the first generation of BMW's iDrive control system, which combines various systems like the climate control, navigation, and audio functions into a single array that's operated - rather clumsily we must say - via a center-console-mounted knob.
