6-Series
Slotted between
BMW's 5- and 7-Series sedans,
a new-for-2005 6-Series is the first of its designation to be sold in
North America since 1989. This
seductively styled coupe and convertible duo ride low to the ground and come
powered by a 4.4-liter V-8 engine that uses the automaker's advanced Valvetronic
variable valve timing to generate 325-horsepower. As in the 5-Series sedan upon
which its based, the 645i offers a standard six-speed manual transmission or the
choice of a Steptronic automatic or BMW's Sequential Manual Gearbox, which
features shift paddles on the steering wheel, Formula One-style. The car's
sporty steering and suspension systems hold the corners more tenaciously than
the 5-Series, and a Dynamic Driving Control system allows the driver to engage a
"sport" mode for quicker throttle response and reduced steering boost (as well
as more-aggressive shifts with the automatic or sequential-shift transmissions).
Other technical features include Active Roll Stabilization, Active Steering,
run-flat tires, and a head-up display. Much to the chagrin of automotive
journalists (and owners) who continue to confounded by its operation, BMW's
iDrive control system is also included that combines the climate control,
navigation, and audio functions into a single array operated via a
center-console knob.

The legend returns - and brings some controversy with
it.
