3-Series

Completely revised for 2006, BMW's compact 3-Series continues to lead the pack of sports sedans in terms of sheer performance. While the new model's bodywork features a number of minor tweaks, it remains unmistakable as a 3-Series. The 325i comes with a new 3.0-liter engine that's rated at 215 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the 330's 3.0-liter in-line six gets a 30-percent boost in power and is rated at 225 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. These are the first mass-production powerplants to make use of lightweight magnesium construction, as well as the first BMW six-cylinders to employ variable valve lift technology. Both a standard six-speed manual transmission and six-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift capability are offered. A revised suspension includes a double-pivot strut design up front and a new five-link configuration at the rear. An array of new braking technologies includes Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying, and Comfort Stop. In addition, Start-Off Assistant is on hand to automatically hold the car while stopped on an incline. All-wheel-drive versions will be added to the line by the end of 2005, with coupes, wagons, and convertibles following in set intervals. A CD stereo, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and alloy wheels remain standard, with rear side airbags, a navigation system, and the latest version of BMW's iDrive system (which combines various systems like the climate control, navigation, and audio functions into a single array that's operated via a center-console knob) remain optional. An iPod Adapter is available that allows an Apple iPod MP3 player to work with and be controlled by the vehicle's audio system.

An all-new 3-Series bears the weight of BMW's past, present, and future.

It's all about the cargo.
