S4

Coming in both sedan and Avant wagon versions, with quattro all-wheel-drive standard, this sportier version of the A4 offers exceptional performance - 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5.3 seconds - thanks to its 340-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8 engine. This remains the only eight-cylinder powerplant to be offered among European compact sports sedans. It can be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic automatic shifter that can be taken through the gears like a manual. The A4's already crisp handling is improved upon with the addition of stiffer shocks and springs, stronger stabilizer bars at the front and rear, and a lower (by 30 mm) ride height. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, the latest version of Audi's Electronic Stabilization Program, traction control, and front-side and side-curtain airbags all come standard. Other distinguishing characteristics range from color-contrasting titanium-colored inner housings and a rear spoiler on the sedan and aluminum roof rails on the wagon, to dual exhaust pipes and sport seats.

2004 Audi S4 Cabriolet by John Pearley Huffman (5/17/2004)
Complacent outside, torrid inside - and the top goes down.
