(2004 model shown)

The sportiest version of Audi's A4 sedan continues for 2005 with few changes as one of the quickest compact sport sedans available, thanks to its 340-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8 engine. This is the first eight-cylinder powerplant to be offered in its class and it comes ready to run and run fast.

The car comes standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system and offers a choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed Tiptronic automatic shifter that can be taken through the gears like a manual by means of its Formula One-style steering-wheel-mounted paddles. The car's exemplary suspension benefits from overly large 18-inch wheels and performance tires. A rear spoiler, dual exhaust pipes and Recaro sport seats otherwise distinguish the S4 from its A4 showroom siblings.

Already coming lavishly equipped, the vehicle's few optional additions include rear side-impact airbags and a satellite navigation system.

Complacent outside, torrid inside - and the top goes down.
