A number of noteworthy enhancements grace Audi's full-size flagship A8 luxury sedan for 2005.

For starters, the line receives a new standard-wheelbase version as an alternative to the extended-length A8L that debuted last year. A 6.0 A8L model also debuts; it comes powered by a mighty 450-horsepower W-12 engine and sports Audi's new oblong-shaped front grille that was first shown on the likewise-new A6. It's also said to be the first production car in the world to incorporate LED daytime running lights, which is claimed to provide maximum visibility to other motorists with minimal power consumption.

A 330-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8 that delivers strong and smooth acceleration remains the standard powerplant.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that can be taken through the gears like a manual. In either standard or long-wheelbase form, the A8 remains a handsome, comfortable, and relatively nimble large sedan that excels when the weather turns nasty by virtue of its standard quattro all-wheel-drive system.
