Audi's mid-size A6 sedan gets a major makeover for 2005 that includes a more elegantly restyled exterior, a longer wheelbase, and a new choice of powertrains. Standard is a new 255 horsepower 3.2-liter V-6 engine that delivers more-than-adequate acceleration, while an available 4.2-liter V-8 that was previously installed in last year's S6 sedan generates a sturdier 335 horses. While the new A6's Multitronic CVT automatic transmission is carried over from the previous generation, it can now be "shifted" like a manual in its seven-stage Tiptronic mode, even though there are no gears involved. Both front- and all-wheel-drive Quattro models continue to be offered. The car's torsional stiffness is claimed to now be 34 percent sturdier than before, which translates into a smoother and quieter ride, with enhanced driving dynamics. A long list of technological features includes an optional xenon adaptive headlamp system that can illuminate the road ahead through corners, and a Multi-Media Interface that's similar to BMW's oft-criticized iDrive system. While it likewise combines navigation, audio, climate control, and other related functions into a single joystick-operated system with a dashboard-mounted video display, it's a bit more intuitive to operate and features an engaging, animated user interface.
