Acura's flagship sedan is redesigned for 2005 and becomes more powerful and roomier in the process, with added features. While a V-8 engine is still not available in the RL (unlike most of its competition), the new version's 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine is rated at 300 horsepower, making it the strongest powerplant ever installed in an Acura. The only available transmission is a five-speed Sequential SportShift automatic that can be taken through the gears manually, via either a console shifter or steering-wheel-mounted race car-like paddle controls.

Built with extensive use of lightweight aluminum with a rigid unibody frame, the RL's ride and handling abilities benefit from a four-wheel independent suspension and a new Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive System that distributes the optimum amount of torque between both the front/rear and left/right rear wheels for added grip on slick roads. A new satellite navigation system includes a real-time traffic-monitoring function for 20 U.S. cities that can pinpoint current road delays and suggest alternate routes. An Adaptive Front Lighting System that helps illuminate the road around corners at night, and a keyless access/starting system are prominent among the RL's long list of standard features.
