Most of the main rivals to the XC90 have received extensive redesigns just over the past year or two.

Like the Volvo, the BMW X5 offers a small third-row seat and excellent dynamics.

The Volkswagen Touareg and Mercedes-Benz M-Class are limited to just two rows of seats, but both have seen major redesigns; the Mercedes-Benz is much more refined than previous versions while still offering some off-road ability, and the Touareg loses some weight and becomes more practical for family use.

The Acura MDX has a smooth, responsive powertrain and handles surprisingly well.
