Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

With a price range that starts around $34k and ranges past $50k fully loaded, the 2013 XC70 spans between mass-market crossovers and luxury wagons and crossovers, and it's less expensive than any comparable BMW, Audi, or Mercedes-Benz.

If you expand the potential models to include taller crossovers, the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX are strong contenders.

The Lexus is offered in a hybrid model as well, while the MDX offers strong handling and a sporty style that has aged well.

At the more affordable end of the XC70 span, the Subaru Outback should be considered as an alternative; it's not nearly as luxurious and premium-feeling inside, but it serves many of the same roles and is in the same way more of a tall-riding station wagon than a true utility vehicle.

One more alternative, the Audi Allroad, is new for 2013 and it pairs rugged exterior cues with some of the interior luxuries of Audi's larger vehicles--plus a very fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Volvo's own XC60 is more of a crossover utility vehicle in silhouette and mission but is worth a look as well.
