The practical 2012 Volvo XC70 competes in the increasingly crowded field of near-luxury crossovers.
Starting around $33,000, it's less expensive than anything of its size from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Volkswagen.
The reigning champion in that class is the Lexus RX line, which is newer and offers a hybrid model.
The Acura MDX is also frequently found in upscale suburbs, offering sportier styling and roadholding than the stolid Volvo.
The XC70 may compete with the upper end of the even-more-practical Subaru range, though the 2012 Subaru Tribeca is nearing the end of its life and falling behind the curve on features.
But the most likely competition for the XC70 is its XC60 crossover sibling.
Newer, better looking, and chronically in short supply, the XC60 has been a smash success as Volvo's first mid-size crossover.
The XC70, based on a station wagon no longer sold here, offers many of the same abilities but is older, less stylish, and within $500 of the same price.
