In base form, with front-wheel drive, the 2013 Volvo S80 is a very comfortable luxury sedan that's absolutely brimming with comfort features and active-safety marvels.

For the time being, the Cadillac XTS is looking like the S80's strongest rival.

The XTS includes some standout safety of its own, including many of the same features as the Volvo, and its seat will vibrate to warn the driver of hazards.

The Cadillac also has the breakthrough new CUE touch-screen interface.

If you want (or need) something more flamboyant, there's the V-8-powered Jaguar XF; it's scorching and smooth, and kind of the polar opposite of the stark Volvo.

Both the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class worth considering in their V-8 (or turbo six) versions with all-wheel drive; but their prices end up being much higher.
