Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

No longer one of a few subcompacts on the road, the Suzuki SX4 has plenty of newer competition, some of it highly entertaining in its own right.

There's the Chevy Sonic, one of our favorite small cars to drive, thanks to powerful turbo versions and sprightly handling, and the Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2, both a bit smaller in overall interior space but with road manners almost as fun as the Chevy's.

The Nissan Versa sedan offers some of the same value proposition as the SX4, and a similar lack of frills but from a better-known nameplate.

And for those who need all-wheel drive to complete their driving experience, there's the compact Subaru Impreza, new last year, with improvements in ride, handling, and performance, as well as styling and features.

Meta Rating
7
A good value in the subcompact class, the Suzuki SX4 is one of the least expensive all-wheel-drive cars you can buy.
8.2
The 2013 Chevrolet Sonic swaps econobox blues for sporty driving feel as well as safety, refinement, and comfort.
7.6
Small cars don't need to be bland--the 2013 Ford Fiesta proves that with a saucy look and pert handling.
7
The 2013 Mazda2 stands out among entry-level hatchbacks due to its zippy driving feel and good real-world mileage--although the limited feature set and basic appointments won't appeal to everyone.
7.8
The 2013 Impreza retains the Subaru hallmarks of standard all-wheel drive, practicality, and durability, while packing in more features for the money—and it looks good doing it.
6.6
The 2012 Nissan Versa is a reasonably comfortable, well-equipped new car for used-car money—but if you're a stickler for the details it can feel as cheap as it is.
