Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

The Crosstrek’s competitive set includes some of the smallest and most carlike crossover vehicles on the market.

Among those, the MINI Cooper Countryman has probably emerged as the most carlike; it has an unmatched interior design that some might find gimmicky and others might fall for; otherwise, the MINI's ride is harsh.

The Jeep Compass is another alternative, and about the same size, although the Compass has a noisier interior and its materials still feel lower-budget.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport also feels subpar inside in many respects, although it handles quite well.

The Range Rover Evoque costs quite a bit more, but it offers the same kind of trail ability and good on-road handling as the Crosstrek, but with more power and better straight-line performance overall.

Finally, it's also worth considering the larger Subaru Forester, which is more of a traditional utility vehicle and at the base level not that much more expensive than the XV Crosstrek.

Quick Specs
Meta Rating
8.2
The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek aims to provide the kind of trail ability and space for gear that weekend adventurer types need; but it also looks like a great value for Snow Belt commuters and small families -- and an alternative to bulkier crossover utilities.
6.4
The 2013 Jeep Compass is affordable and makes good practical sense—but its disappointing interior appointments and lack of refinement limit its appeal.
8.2
The era of truly coupe-like SUVs dawns, finally, and the 2012 Range Rover Evoque nails it with turbo thrust and carlike handling.
7.6
If you do most of your driving in the city, the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a pleasant, nimble runabout that offers strong value for the money.
7.4
The 2012 Subaru Forester is tough, all-weather-capable, and one of the best-handling compact crossovers--plus, a blast to drive in XT turbo form--but an old-tech automatic transmission and econo-caliber interior remain letdowns.
8
The 2012 MINI Countryman brings the right mix of sport, utility, and comfort to the compact crossover game.
