The 2013 Subaru Tribeca remains one of the more compact mid-size crossovers, yet like most other mid-sizers it offers a third-row seat.

Among rivals in this class, the Tribeca has by far the most dated design.

The Toyota Highlander is by no means exciting, but its third row is optional and it's offered in a wide range of models including four-cylinder and Hybrid variants.

The Honda Pilot makes the most of its interior space, as the boxy interior suggests, and it's more of a traditional SUV package while offering surprisingly responsive handling and maneuverability—plus it offers up to eight seats.

The Ford Edge and Nissan Murano are alternatives that only offer two rows of seating; the Edge has recently been refreshed and has more of a luxury feel inside—along with advanced MyFord Touch connectivity; meanwhile the Murano has a nicely appointed interior and is perhaps closest in presentation to the Tribeca, attempting to reach upward in the market with a more sophisticated, urban look and feel.

Quick Specs
Meta Rating
7.6
Good all-weather handling and strong safety ratings are reasons for families to keep the 2013 Subaru Tribeca on the list of contenders; but a dated design and low gas mileage could prove hard to overlook.
8.2
The 2013 Ford Edge cuts through the crossover clutter with a 30-mpg turbo model, MyFord Touch's step-ahead connectivity, and exceptional interior room.
7.8
The 2013 Nissan Murano trades away some utility and space-efficiency in the name of style and refinement.
7.6
Don't let the macho-boxy look intimidate you; the Honda Pilot makes a lot of sense for large families—especially with improved mileage and a most tasteful front-end design for 2012.
7.8
The 2012 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid to roomy, three-row family crossover wagons what the Camry is to mid-size sedans: comfortable, safe, and full-featured—but more than a little bland.
