Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

The 2012 Subaru Tribeca competes with a number of mid-size crossover utility vehicles, most of which include third-row seating in some form.

The Toyota Highlander comes with an available third-row seat and is offered in four-cylinder, V-6, and Hybrid versions; the issue with the Toyota is that its interior appointments are rather dull and it lacks driving personality.

And if you want eight seats in a more traditional package, the Honda Pilot is one of the best ways to go.

The Nissan Murano is only a five-passenger vehicle, but we like the luxury feel of its nicely appointed interior.

The Ford Edge has been revamped over the past year, and it rides and handles well, like the Tribeca; the Edge's tech features, including MyFord Touch, are also well ahead of those in the Subaru.

Meta Rating
8
The 2012 Subaru Tribeca has excellent all-weather handling and top-notch safety, though it's fallen behind the curve in features and interior appointments.
8.2
The 2012 Ford Edge rises to the top of the five-seat crossover niche with forward-thinking technology and a gas-saving EcoBoost option.
7.6
Don't let the macho-boxy look intimidate you; the Honda Pilot makes a lot of sense for large families—especially with improved mileage and a most tasteful front-end design for 2012.
7.8
It's stylish and refined, but the 2012 Nissan Murano isn't the most space-efficient crossover.
7.8
The 2012 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid to roomy, three-row family crossover wagons what the Camry is to mid-size sedans: comfortable, safe, and full-featured—but more than a little bland.
