The 2014 Subaru Impreza stands more or less alone in the segment as an economy car with standard all-wheel drive.

Most don't even have it as an option. The Mazda 3 has been redesigned for 2014, and it's a real looker with a lot of available technology and one of the sportiest driving feels available.

The Kia Forte costs less, but offers more options in a sleeker package with better fuel economy.

The VW Golf and Jetta both offer TDI clean-diesel models, which may appeal to some of Subaru's more earth-conscious shoppers.

Other alternatives include the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus.

Quick Specs
8.0
The 2014 Subaru Impreza remains the only option in its class to come equipped with standard all-wheel-drive, where many don't offer it all. It's tough, practical, and looks good, too.
7.4
The 2014 Kia Forte finds better focus with well-rounded performance and grabby good looks, but its safety scores concern us.
8.4
The 2014 Mazda 3 stands out from the small-car crowd, with its sport-car-influenced proportions and sporty driving experience; but its tight, noisy cabin means that it’s not at all the best pick for pragmatists.
7.8
The 2014 Volkswagen Golf hatchback offers excellent handling and a good ride, premium interior design and materials, and a range of engines--including the efficient TDI diesel--but at a premium price.
8.4
Civic who? Corolla what? The Hyundai Elantra's one of the new standard bearers in the compact class, with 38-mpg fuel economy, better safety, and class-leading standard features.
