While the Audi Q7 might seem like the natural alternative to the Porsche Cayenne, it's significantly larger inside, with an available third-row seat, a different range of engines, and its own take on luxury and style.

In terms of handling and performance, the Infiniti FX35 and FX50 are the Cayenne's closest rivals, being even more agile, but they don't offer the off-road ability of the Porsche and sacrifice even more to space and ride quality than the Cayenne.

BMW's X5 is not as quick and nimble (though the X5 M is a mighty alternative to the Cayenne Turbo), but it does offer slightly more space.

The Range Rover Sport is a similar mix of on-road performance and off-road ability to the Cayenne's, but its aging design and somewhat cramped quarters pull up short.

For an offbeat alternative, consider the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, which offers a 470-horsepower V-8 engine and serious straight-line performance, enough to rival the Cayenne Turbo S at a fraction of the price.

Meta Rating
8.2
The 2013 Porsche Cayenne spans a wide range of capabilities, from basic family hauler to track-worthy sports SUV, with a few stops in between--including a brand new diesel.
8.6
The 2013 Audi Q7 is a premium, lavishly-appointed three-row utility vehicle with great on-road manners and capability, plus towing ability--without the off-road style or pretense.
8
While it's not as fresh-faced as some of the competition, the 2013 BMW X5 continues to shine in utility, comfort, driving, and, in the X5 M, shockingly high performance.
8.4
The 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee blurs the SUV-crossover line expertly; better transmissions are at the top of the wish list.
7.8
The most broadly talented luxury SUV of its kind, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport is plush, quick, rugged, and authentic--as well as pricey, thirsty, and not especially spacious.
