The MINI Countryman's priced at a premium, even though interior space is at a premium compared to some big domestic crossovers.

In that sense it's a lot like its cousin, the BMW X1, a compact rear- or all-wheel-drive ute new this year, with a turbo four or turbo six powerplant and a very, very small back seat.

The Range Rover Evoque's a titan compared to these two, even as a three-door, but its price tag of $43k or more is substantially stiffer, too.

More in the price ballpark with the MINI are the considerably less flavorful VW Tiguan and Acura RDX; turbo four or V-6, respectively, they're both relative wallflowers in terms of styling and content, though dynamically they work pretty well.

The 2013 Acura RDX improves on the sporty crossover theme with refined ride quality, more features, and better fuel economy.
7.8
In our first drive, the 2013 BMW X1 seems a little more enthusiastic than it is versatile.
8.2
The 2013 Range Rover Evoque nails the coupe-crossover concept, and puts the off-roading on mute with a sexy shape and a casual elegance.
7.8
The 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan is a little conservative in look and feel, but otherwise it has everything that urban crossover shoppers want.
