Though there's nothing left on the road quite like the G-Class, the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover is one of the few vehicles to mix true off-road grit with extreme luxury, and therefore should be on the short list of comparison vehicles for anyone interested in a G-Class.

The Land Rover's more conventional, modern looks will be preferable for some, but the G-Class's squared-off, military look strikes a silhouette like nothing else on the road. Those looking for a more refined, modern vehicle but still wanting to stick within the Mercedes-Benz fold should look at the GL-Class, which offers similar size and luxury in a more technologically sophisticated package.

The GL-Class, while competent off-road, can't match the G-Class's extreme ability, however.
